How to read
the ESX monitor.

Ketsela Research · 19 October 2026

A price is a useful starting point. Understanding what it measures—and what it leaves out—is the next step.

Start with the source.

The ESX monitor reads the public ticker on the Ethiopian Securities Exchange website. The board displays equity symbols, prices in Ethiopian birr, and the percentage changes supplied by that source. The interbank money-market rate is excluded from the equity board.

A retrieval time is not a trading time.

The ticker does not supply a trading-session date. The time on our board tells you when Ketsela retrieved the figures, not when a trade happened. It also does not establish that the quotes are live. When the source cannot be refreshed, the monitor labels its saved capture and keeps the original retrieval time.

Read the move with its limits.

The up, down, and flat labels follow the ticker’s reported percentage changes. The ticker does not specify the comparison period. The change chart compares these figures across the displayed equities; it is not a historical price chart, an exchange index, or a measure of total market return.

Look beyond the price.

Useful research asks about trading activity, company disclosures, earnings, and market structure alongside price. Monthly monitors and quarterly reviews will provide a place for that work. Until an issue is published, it is marked forthcoming in the archive.
